1The Hip and the Bee Geesbgfan@bell.net

Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2017 13:49:07 -0500 From: "Anne Simpson" <bgfan@bell.net> Subject: The Hip and the Bee Gees A month ago today, Canadians awoke to the devastating news that 53-year-old Gord Downie, the lead singer of the Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip (known as The Hip), had died. The Hip are an iconic Canadian band, having been around for 30 years (although they never made it big in the US). The news was not entirely unexpected. In May 2016, it was announced that Gord had an incurable brain tumour - an aggressive glioblastoma - and that the band were going out on a final tour. This despite the fact that Gord had had a temporal lobectomy, radiation, and chemo and was having memory problems. His voice is uniquely identifiable; his on-stage style flamboyant. The Hip's final concert was so important to Canada that the CBC actually pre-empted coverage of the Olympics to broadcast it live! It was a farewell celebration, with cheers and tears. Everyone knew that this was good-bye. Gord's death was of such significance that the flag on the Peace Tower at Parliament Hill in Ottawa was lowered to half-mast. I was out of the country when a documentary called "The Tragically Hip - Long Time Running," about that final tour, aired a few days later, but I caught it when it re-aired recently. It includes interviews w Gord and his long-time band members, as well as clips from the concerts. And this is where the Bee Gees content comes in. At one point in the interview Gord talks about the music that kept him going and says, "I would crank music . and then it would be . the Bee Gees, who are my secret - you know. It's not a band you're supposed to - but God, I love them!" If you want to learn more about The Hip, you can watch the documentary @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci2VnIk9AQI. I encourage you to do so. The comment about the Bee Gees - which clearly came from Gord's heart - is @ 9:40. Anne Back to top
