I have been listening to this album on Spotify. I agree with Joe that High
and Windy Mountain isn't very pleasant to listen to. The biggest problem in
my view is that P.P. tends to sing most of the notes very looooong and very
LOUD and with a strong vibrato. Barry, with his phrasing, would have
avoided this problem I think, even with this tempo.
I'm not saying it's all P.P.'s fault, one could just as well say that Barry
as a producer should have noticed this problem too.
But as far as I can tell (I haven't figured out all the lyrics yet) the
song is good, as is Bill Shepherd's arrangement. I didn't particularly
notice the second rate musicians Joe heard on this album but maybe I should
listen more closely. (Maybe the lead guitarist, who sounds a bit clumsy).
The other songs that Barry produced are all better. Born is an up-tempo
rock song which means P.P. just doesn't have the time to overstretch the
notes, ha! Bury me down at the river and Give a hand, take a hand also have
P.P. put on her big gospel voice again but here it works much better. I
think I still prefer the Bee Gees' versions though.
The thing I noticed about The turning tide is how great a song that
actually is. I don't know enough about it but to me it seems Barry is
playing a game with constantly switching between different keys in one song.
Happiness has P.P. singing in a more hushed tone of voice which makes for a
nice change. Good song too.
The other two Barry produced songs actually sound great. Bill Shepherd's
arrangements add something to those songs.
All in all, P.P. Arnold is not my favourite singer, but the songs and
arrangements are definitely worth a listen.

It was discussed -- briefly.
What are your thoughts on the album?
What did you like? Why?
What didn't you like? Why?
What were some of the musical high points/low points? Please explain.
Do you think each Gibb selection was suited to their voice? Please explain your answer.
You, as a musician, what would you have done differently? Please elaborate.
