"Turning Tide" finally arrived today here in the wilds of New Jersey. Amazon.com, where was it? What a let-down. Could they PLAY the songs any slower? (Chandler Bing intonation). HIgh and WIndy Mountain is almost unlistenable... no, scratch "almost". I could not finish it. I hear distinctive Barry Gibb guitar on the ones he wrote, but no Maurice, and no Barry either on Spinning Wheel and You've Made Me So Very Happy. Bill Shepherd's musicians must have been hired at a second rate wedding reception. The stereo mix does not sound right for the period. The vocals and instruments are mono except for the string sections that drift left and right. When I find our microscope (I really am married to a scientist) I will be able to read the liner notes and see whether they have any comment on whether the mixes are recent. Now that I know what P P Arnold sounds like, I wonder whether the vocals on the Bee Gees' Bury Me Down by the RIver are Maddy Bell, not P P. The song Turning Tide: B & R on the 1968 copyright (US), B & M on the Cu Cas album, and now just B here. As if it matters. -- Joe Brennan Back to top

At least with respect to the Gibb brothers songwriting, in general. Sal Salvatore Compoccia compoccia@aol.com Back to top
