That is a good point, David.  I can't imagine any of the brothers or the people around them, especially at that early stage, had any real knowledge of French.  Mind you, from what I remember, it was pretty basic French, shrug?  And yes, why French?  Maybe it was an attempt to appear sophisticated (something no one could ever accuse the brothers of, lol)?
