We take a look at the 53-year-old's life whose iconic harmonies and catchy guitar riffs will always be remembered When did Maurice Gibb die? Maurice unexpectedly died at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Florida, aged 53. On 12 January 2003, Gibb passed away with his wife, children and brothers at his side. After his death, Maurice was described as a "controlled alcoholic", who battled substance abuse for many years. According to reports, it was The Beatles singer John Lennon who introduced him to his favourite drink: scotch and coke. How did the Bee Gee's singer die? Maurice died after he reported complications of a twisted intestine. The condition is medically referred to as Ischemic Enteropathy. The singer suffered cardiac arrest, moments before docs were going to operate on his twisted intestine. Autopsy reports revealed that his bowel and small intestine had become so twisted, they restricted his blood flow. Until this day, Maurice's brothers, Robin and Barry Gibb question his doctor's decisions. They remain unsure if surgery should have been an option for Maurice. Who was Maurice Gibb married to? Maurice Gibb had two marriages before he died. He first married pop singer Lulu in 1969. But four years later the sixties pop icon dumped Maurice because of his heavy drinking problem. Reflecting on their relationship, Lulu claims they "shouldn't have got married in the first place". She told Piers Morgan that they should have kept their relationship as a "romance". A year later, in 1975, Gibb married his second wife Yvonne Spenceley Gibb - which lasted until he passed away. How many children did Maurice Gibb have? Maurice had two children with his second wife Yvonne. Adam, 41, and Samantha, 37, who has inherited her dad's musical passions. In a sensitive interview, Samantha revealed the painful details of her legendary dad's substance abuse. Although she and her dad had "similar personalities", she said he continually battled with his demons. Dr Jason Payne-James investigates the extraordinary events leading up to his death, on September 15 Channel 5 at 10pm. Back to top
