They have written songs for loud singers -- Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion -- but in their own live performances, mic placement and mix levels can be an issue. For example, in the Midnight Special tv clip of "Nights on Broadway," Robin's solo phrases keep getting drowned out by the rhythm section! So, perhaps backup singers serve a purpose in filling out passages that can use a little more vocal infrastructure... . David Garcia, who could use some backup singers when he is singing in the shower, but shyness is an issue in NYC .
