It was Kenny Rogers's biggest hit of the 1980s (and his last major hit since). However, as far as outselling Elvis, that's subject to debate. Elvis's biggest hit for RCA occurred in 1956 with the double-sided hit "Hound Dog" and "Don't Be Cruel." The two songs combined held the number one position on Billboard's pop charts for eleven weeks, and has sold more than ten million copies - the majority of those sales occurring in 1956. The problem with any comparisons between the Kenny Rogers's Bee Gees penned song and Elvis's biggest hit is in the fact the Record Industry Association of America didn't have the platinum level in 1956. In fact, they had no levels of any kind in 1956 - the RIAA certification process didn't begin until 1958! Many record labels bandied the term "gold record" around with no real independent audit to verify any such claim. Most "gold records" that many artists received in the 1950s and 1960s were in-house recognition awards. And not all of the record labels were members of the RIAA, such as Motown. That label did not join the RIAA until their merger with MCA Records in the 80s. I'm not sure whether the labels today continue to have in-house recognition awards, but I wouldn't be surprised. Peace, Frank << "Islands In The Stream" is one of the biggest crossover hits of all time. I believe this song went to number one on both charts. That crossover success helped it become the only platinum single of 1983 and from what I've heard the biggest single in RCA history, even bigger than anything Elvis did on RCA. >> ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 21:55:58 EDT From: CAPT1SEPT@aol.com Subject: Songwriting Pt.2 Getting back to who wrote what discussion a short time back, I was reading a book I have on Buddy Holly, titled "Rave On" by Phillip Norman. It mentioned the songwriting credits as to who actually wrote what are a mess because of Norman Petty's rather sloppy session information sheets. It seems Norman Petty, aside from claiming writing credits on the majority of Buddy's tunes, either added Buddy's name to songs he didn't write, or added his band mates names to songs they didn't write with Buddy. And I was wondering who was in charge of taking down the session information for the Bee Gees's songs, whether in Australia prior to January 1, 1967, and after they signed contracts with Robert Stigwood. I have an old Playboy article on the Bee Gees from 1979 in which Maurice recounted having to explain why he was being credited as one of the writers on certain songs to (I guess) the individual in charge of logging the songs recorded and the writers of those songs. I have also read statements by Barry the writing credits will almost always (with rare exceptions) be credited to the three of them - that it didn't matter who actually wrote the song, whether one or two were involved: it would still be reported as being written by all three. And I was thinking the reason for this was that in the early days, Maurice was denied writing credits on their early hits because Robert Stigwood was trying to build the Bee Gees in the image of the Beatles - and Maurice was to be the George Harrison equivalent. I could be wrong about all this, but I've always been intrigued by this aspect of the recordings. Peace, Frank ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 19:11:32 -0700 From: "D.
