Salutations, Aaron! Thank you for your review of the Odessa album. When I was just getting into the Bee Gees, I bought the single red cardboard record from the Emporium (when they used to exist), and the double album with the red felt cover and the gold embossed title, which I thought was neat. As you open the album, I love the inside artwork of people being put into a lifeboat. I wonder who's idea it was to release the album with the red felt cover? Rather unique for a Bee Gees album. I also read that Odessa was originally conceived to be a "concept" album, but obviously it didn't turn out that way, which may be the result of all those drugs they were taking. Still, I enjoy this album because it has numerous gems, including "First of May" and the orchestrations. I am quite fond of the opening track, "Odessa", because it is both haunting and strangely poetic. I'll never get over Robin Gibb singing about sailing on an iceberg to her lips! Talk about visuals! Now that would make an interesting video montage! Anyway, thank you, Aaron, that was a most interesting reading experience. SIR GEOFFREY ... I'd sail on an iceberg, but, my gawd, it sure is cold on my lips!!!! This is designed for people to make comments about the album, thoughts, etc. Anyway, here goes.... 1. Odessa (City On The Black Sea) - perhaps the longest ever Bee Gees song, on a official album, at 7:33. The haunting harmonies at the start of the song set the mood for the rest of the album. The sea winds blow before we hear the ship Veronica was lost without a sign. The song changes shape when it goes into the "Cherub..." with Robin singing beautifully. The song builds up with "I won't melt away, and I see your face again" before the climax of "Oooo....dd.....eeee....ssss.aaaaa". A great album intro song. >> ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 12:43:45 -0400 From: "Bill Busch" Subject: BREAKING NEWS (f ?) LOL! Chris, that's hilarious. Thank you! Keep your reviews coming. Odessa is perhaps one of my five favorite LP's ever. The feel and sound are magnificent and, true to form, the Bee Gees never got their just acclaim due them for their tunemanship and recording prowess. That makes it so much better to be here on a Sunday afternoon, 30 years later, reading as you so admirably review this classic LP. Thank you again. By the way, "Sound of Love" with its piano and darkness of spirit makes my favorite tune on Odessa; but here is no bad tune to be found here in this gothic piece of mood music. You did yourself proud; I thoroughly enjoyed your review. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 14:38:35 EDT From: SMizzone@aol.com Subject: Worst Bee Gees Cover, EVER I nominate "And The Sun Will Shine" by famous actor Joe Pesci. Good actor, poor singer. Great song but not in Joe's key I suppose. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 14:38:17 EDT From: LNLP315@aol.com Subject: Re: Cover songs Hi I personally doi not think anyone but the BEEGESS can sing thier songs.
