This was still just 8 track master tape. Once the 8 tracks were filled, to record more you had to "bounce" to another tape, that is mix some of the tracks together, copying to perhaps 4 tracks of a second tape reel so that 4 new tracks could be added to that. Every copy added tape hiss. Whether Robin really got to 40 tracks on Lord Bless All (which he claimed) seems doubtful to me because I don't hear the cloud of hiss that would result. Organ on 1 track and 7 tracks of vocals seems like enough to produce what we hear, or maybe one "bounce" to fill in a little more for the men's and boys' choirs. Mother and Jack needed guitar, bass, Rhythm Ace, orchestra, which might be 5 tracks if they were all separate and the orchestra was recorded across 2 tracks. That leaves 3 tracks for vocals and that seems to be enough for what we hear. They did overdubs as early as Ossie Byrne's studio in Australia. Evidence is the two versions of Monday's Rain which are the same instrumental with two different vocal dubs. Ossie had *one* track master tape, so the vocals were sound-on-sound dubs to a second one track tape, that is, mixing playback of the first tape with live microphone input to the second tape. Barry's solo LP in 1970 was the first any of them used 16 track. Oddly the 2 Years On LP reverted to 8 track, making Trafalgar the first Bee Gees LP recorded on 16 track. --Joe Brennan Back to top

So, maybe in all the rush and confusion they forgot about 16 track recording! On a more serious possibility; could it be that since R&M had recorded some tracks before Barry rejoined them in August of 1970 ( I think they did?) and R&M, unlike Barry with the recent solo album, had used 8 track recording on the tracks they initially Sal P.S. And you still have 4 tracks to play with . Yes or.... Not really? Remember 2YO started as a R&M album and they would have favored Maurice's familiar studios which had simply not yet been upgraded. --Joe Brennan Back to top
