Thanks for sharing your experience. If I may, I would add that to manually change which version of Java =20 is used on Mac OS X Tiger (10.4), you need to open the utility called =20= "Java Preferences" in Application/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0 (so that if =20= anyone have the same problem, he won't search all his hard drive for =20 the place to change that). No problem, you're welcome. I'm happy to help people. I'm happy to see that my not so big =20 knowledge in computer could help, especially Bee Gees fans :) > I have come to one MAJOR conclusion. This site was designed with =20= > a MAC in mind. I should have realized that when at the end of the =20 > instructions there is a suggestion, "If all else fails get a MAC". Well, now that you mention it, it makes sense, yes. > Don't want one. I guess if you are mainly involved with word =20 > processing, teaching, etc., it would be the computer of choice. I =20 > am an accountant and Mac's are not spreadsheet friendly, so =20 > therefore Dell, HP, IBM are the office workers computer of choice. I can understand that Mac cannot be the platform of choice for some =20 activities. Personally, I have to use a PC at works because some of =20 your development applications are running on Windows only. And our =20 servers are Linux for the same reason (no time to port the tools to =20 Mac OS X). I personally use a Mac at home because at home I don't want to spend =20 time making my computer work, I'm doing too much of this at work :) Moreover, it's so much a relief concerning security. See this for =20 example : http://www.cio.com/blog_view.html?CID=3D22683 Just by curiosity, which software do you use for spreadsheet ? > Three programs to install included Firefox for me. IE, yahoo, =20 > MSN are not friendly from my computer for accessing and running =20 > this site. So I installed firefox and it worked. So I installed =20 > firefox, java and quicktime. Ok. Yahoo and MSN web browser are just customized version of IE, I =20 think. Good thing to use Firefox in any case, for security reasons. > You really scared me with "penal responsibility". I really am =20 > not sure whether you are talking about jail, law, the town or body =20 > parts. I realize it is probably in the translation to English, but =20= > I am still somewhat confused. Well, I'm sorry if I scared you. I'm not an expert in US law, but =20 here in France you are responsible for what is done with your =20 computer. So if your computer is hacked and used by someone to do bad =20= things (send hate email, hack other computers, spread viruses, ...), =20 then you can have problem with the law, like being sued by the person =20= receiving the hate email or by the person whose computer has been =20 hacked, if it can trace the attack to your computer. So having a security hole in your computer and still using it on the =20 internet is dangerous, not only for your data and for the computer, =20 but also for you, because you can have serious problem if someone use =20= this security hole to take control of your computer and to make it do =20= bad things. Or at least it's the case in France, I'm not an expert in =20= US law. I had in mind an example of a student a few years ago that was =20 expelled from the university with no way to get back in any =20 university for several years because some child porn photos were =20 found on his unix account. The problem is that the person was not =20 taking care of the security of his account, giving his password to =20 friends, letting his computer never locked, and never putting patches =20= or security alerts. he swear during all the process that he wasn't =20 the one that put the photo here, and in fact there were serious =20 computer-related reasons to think that in fact his account has been =20 hacked and was used from the outside as a file sharing depot. But for =20= the law, he's the one responsible for what is on his account. As a =20 student, he signed a document at the start remembering him of his =20 duty about computer security and about his responsibility. So he =20 wasn't send to jail, but he was expelled from university. I don't mean to scare you. This is not my point. But it's a fact that =20= in France, you're responsible for what is done with your computer. =20 And would guess that it's the same in the US. So not taking care of =20 computer security is very dangerous, I think. > BRING IT ON, refers to whatever you task you want me to do, bring =20= > it on, I will try. Best used during 9/11 here for making a point. Ok, thanks for the explanation. > Speed, I do not think the speed of my computer is the problem. =20 > It is pretty fast and like I said before, the streaming video =20 > worked fine in the chat room, but is not good in the TV. Besides =20 > if speed were the problem, all other site videos would bomb. Not necessary, because it could very well be that it's the new codec =20 they use (H264), that they didn't used at the start but that they use =20= now since the Prince's trust I think, that is too heavy demanding on =20 your computer. And I don't know if other website use this codec or not. Yes, Apple new ads seems to use it. Can you try this URL in Firefox =20 or Quicktime Player : http://images.apple.com/movies/euro/fr/getamac/getamac_ads1/=20 better_480x376.mov It's in French, don't worry, you don't have to understand what they =20 say :) Is the video choppy ? If not, then it's a BG TV problem for sure. If =20 it is, then it's a speed problem for sure. > Thanks Chris for responding and trying to help. You're welcome :) > Like I said in the beginning, I really think the site was =20 > designed with a MAC in mind and not a PC. Buying a MAC is not an =20 > option as it would be a waste of money just to view one site. Yes of course ! :-) And I'm really sure that you don't have to buy a Mac to have it work. =20= In the chatroom there are plenty examples of people accessing it all =20 without any problem. I personally can access both BG Radio and BG TV =20 on the PC of my wife or on my office PC. > You have a great day and again thanks. I hope you also will have a great day :) C. ------------------------------ End words@brothersgibb.com Digest [07/08/2006 09:01] ----------------------------------------------------
