Second, I'm not telling you what to do. I'm only informing you that there is a risk, and I'm telling you what I think of it, that's all. Now, you do what you want, it's your problem, not mine :) But the fact still is: there is at least one very serious security hole in Windows 98/Me that can be exploited remotely to take control of the computer, the exploit code for this hole is known and is circulating on the internet, and there is NO (and there will never be) a patch for this hole. So for now and as long as the computer is using windows 98/me, the computer will be vulnerable on the internet. That's the fact. Now, each one takes and assumes its own responsability, that's all :) C. Maybe. Did you try with another web browser, like Firefox ? Does the radio works ? Are all the 3 tests pass ? > I think it's a wrong decision to continue on this path. You cannot > expect people to follow these exact guidelines with patience. If it's > Flash or Shockwave, it's alright, but Quicktime and JAVA, in this unholy > marriage... Maybe. Problem is that, from what I know, it's very difficult to have the same video quality with Flash. And more and more people are complaining about Flash and its irrespect of privacy. Did you known that for example each flash application you see on the net can save up to 10 ko of any data it want on your computer ? And by default, the flash player is configured so that you're not even asked if you really want it or not, by default every flash application can use this feature without asking. Maybe the solution would be for them to use either only Java or only Quicktime. But just my 2 cents advice here. > I think the answer is, a very fast media server, like the ones that host > all the new music videos that run perfectly within a second in your > browser or media player of your choice. Very fast is not the problem here. And, from what I know (but I may be wrong), proposing the 3 formats will only solve the "single video" streaming, but I'm not sure this solution could be used for a 24/7 streaming (like the TV right now) or even for the "live streaming" like the one Barry's done 2 times since last Chrismas. But again, still only my 2 cents advice. C. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Jul 2006 12:52:10 +0200 From: Christophe Bouthier Subject: Re: BarryGibbTV problems Thanks a lot to you. I cannot see CNN or FOX videos (on my mac), because I don't have Windows Media Player installed. I can see YouTube videos, but the quality is very very low, compared to BGTV. I didn't test the other. So again, this is really dependant of the client's computer. One solution will work flowlesly on one computer, when another one will just won't work. On another computer, it will be just the opposite. No way to control this on the developer side, except proposing all techno (like on the Rhino site), but this will works only for streaming one video at a time I'm afraid. > I went thru the chat instructions and still no deal. > Then I installed Firefox and uninstalled and re-installed java > then QTime unblocked pop ups and low and behold I got BarryGibbchat. Chatroom doesn't have anything to do with Quicktime as far as I know. As far as I can tell, chatroom techno has nothing to do with radio or tv, except that it's Java. > When they added the webcam, no problem. Radio was no problem. >BarryGibbTV even works but the video quality is choppy in comparison to >what was available in the chat (where I do hate to go even if Barry is there). Strange, because, as far as I can tell, and from what some have told on the chatroom, the DSL/medium quality is exactly the same than the one that was available in the chat before. Same video codec than the new videos like the prince's trust (some old videos were in H263 I think), same audio codec, same sample rates, ... > Since I was able to get good videos and sound in the chat, I have to assume it is the TV. Sorry, I didn't understood: what is exactly the problem you have with TV ? No sound ? Bad video quality ? > Not to worry though, the fix has to come on the other end soon, too many complaints. Well, I surely hope so, but I wouldn't hold my breath :) > I went to all this trouble in hopes of getting something spectacular, but so far all > they show is repeats of Prince's Trust, Love and Hope Rehearsal and the webcam interview. > I saw all that in chat room, so the choppy TV is OK, however if they ever do decide to put up videos, > I hope they fix the TV. Ok, so the problem is that you got choppy video (and sound ?), right ? With which quality ? High, medium or low ? > It was a lot of trouble and I do not understand WHY so much stuff has to be done > by the user and so little by the supplier. > Sorry Chris, but these things are suppose to be user friendly. No need to be sorry :) Yes, I totally agree with you, things are supposed to be user friendly. Now, as I have already told, you will always have something to do on the user's end, for some users, because there is no standard technology for streaming that is directly available with all web browsers on all platforms. First solution: as the rhino site, propose all 3 main technologies (qt, real, wmp). Good point: there is good chance that at least one will be working on the user's side. Bad point: won't work for a "live stream" (no way I know to make one live stream accessible in the 3 formats), may not work for a continuous stream (24/7), really easy to copy the stream content. Second solution: make the techno easier to install. Here, it would mean stick to only Java OR quicktime, but not the 2 of them. Good point: easier to install, no "installation order" problem. Bad point: Java is necessary for the chat room. Quicktime is necessary for the streaming. Moreover, Java is necessary for the custom interface and the "added functionnalities" (like the "buy it" button on the radio). Finally, even without the "installation order" problem, you can still have "old java not installed" problem, "old quicktime because too old system" problem, ... So you won't resole all problems, just reduce the number of problems. Really, my point is not to excuse the developers, or to defend them. But as a developer myself, I really think the problem is more complicated that only a "half-baked" piece of software. Well, just my 2 cent opinion here, as always. IMOHO it shouldn't be just for those privileged fans who have the > very latest computer system and can always afford to keep it up to date. > > Maggie I agree with you. This kind of thing should be accessible for the maximum of fans. However, Windows 2000 is 6 years old. It cannot, by any means, be considered a "very lastest computer system". Windows 98/Me are _so_ old that even their maker (Microsoft) will stop support them in a few days. http://www.toptechnews.com/news/Microsoft-Ends-Support-for-Windows-98/story.xhtml?story_id=003000ARO196 (By the way, I said in another post that those users where by the millions. On this press article, they talk about 70 millions Windows 98 and Me users). And as much as I agree that it should be accessible for the maximum, you have to realize that a few years ago, such a thing (like a live radio and a live tv) were either at their beginning or even not really possible technically. The explosion of streaming content is not old. It started thanks to the explosion of broadband access but also thanks to the augmentation of the plain PC powerhorse. I had a 200 Mhz PC in 1999 that I was really proud of. But right now, I don't think it has enough horsepower to decode H264 or MPEG4 right on the fly, so I'm sure that I would get really choppy BGTV with it. My point is that you cannot reasonably ask to your computer to do something that was just impossible at the time it was made, with a certain limit. I'm not for the no-stop run to fastest technology. I won't change my computer just because a new model is in town. But sometimes, you have to admit that your computer is too old to do some things, especially when related to multimedia or 3D. So it should not be just for very latest computer system, true, but it cannot also be used with any kind of computer, however old it is. There is a right middle between the 2. Just my 2 cents opinion again.
