In reply to Joe Brennan, I totally know what you mean. It is broken meaning it does not work at all. I too have given up. I've wasted hours trying to no avail. I wonder what is wrong? You are absolutely right, Joe, the sound on BG TV is gone and it IS broken. May I say I always enjoy reading your posts. I've learned so much from you. Thank you for sharing I never fail to be amazed at your expertise, and you amaze me. Many thanks! And why do you consider >> it "broken" ? > > > It's broken because it does not work. Well, it is working for some at least, so maybe it's not the "method" (I would rather say "technology") that is broken, but maybe the configuration of the user's computer ? I have spent numerous night on the Barry's gibb chatroom trying to help people, because it happens that I know some things about computers, due to my work. I have helped people getting BG Radio and BGTV. From my experience on the chatroom, I would say that at the end there is more people on the chatroom that do access BG Radio and BGTV than not. I would also say that most of the time, it's the user computer that is the problem. - The most frequent user problem is people saying that they do past the "chatroom help" tests (on the BarryGibb.com page) when in fact they don't. - Second most frequent problem is people saying that they don't past tests but "it should still work because I know my Java/Quicktime is well installed". Well, sorry, but no. - Third most frequent problem is people having way too old computers or operating system. Microsoft will stop in a few days to support Windows 98 and Windows Me. There's a reason for this. Same thing for MacOS 9. http://www.sci-tech-today.com/story.xhtml?story_id=003000C23UFU - Fourth most frequent problem: Norton (or another brand) firewall is getting in the way. Radio and TV needs to connect to a server and needs to get data from this server. If the firewall is blocking this, then no way. Still from my experience, I found the "chatroom help" pages helpful, if you follows the described steps: - check if all 3 tests are passing - if at least one of the tests don't work : - uninstall ALL java (because you may still have old version of Java that are used by your web browser, even if you installed the very last, if you didn't uninstall all Java before). - uninstall Quicktime (because if not Quicktime will not want to reinstall itself, and the necesary library won't install in your brand-new Java). - install very last version of Java - install very last version of Quicktime As told on the help page, the order IS IMPORTANT: Java THEN Quicktime. The reason for this is that if there is a Java available, Quicktime will install a special library for communication between Java and Quicktime. BG Radio and BG TV needs this library. So you need to have the last version of Java, and ONLY the last version of Java installed when you reinstall Quicktime. > I have a high speed cable > connection and recent upgrades to Quicktime and Java and it does not > work. Well, did you try to ask help on the chatroom ? I'm not here all of the time, but if you want we can arrange to meet there, and I may help you as I already helped some. > Many other people here with a variety of computers have said > it does not work for them either. From my experience on the chatroom, people having problem don't have a "variety" of computers. They have a variety of configuration, but always are on Windows. Mac OS X users (on the chatroom at least) never had any problem, except when they are on 10.3 (Java 1.5 needs Tiger, 10.4) or when they forgot to do "Software Updates" (which should be done at least once per week, preferred once per day as it contains security updates). Last version of Quicktime (necessary for the used codec it seems) is not available for Linux, so no radio or tv for them. Same thing for Win98, WinMe, MacOS 9 or older system users. Very hard to found a streaming technology that is available on all platform and still enought performant to have good quality for low bandwidth. They decided for Quicktime. In fact, the problem of windows users is exactly that each computer has a different configuration that the other. Very hard to have any software working on all those configuration. I know this because this is part of my current job, helping people when the software they bought don't work on _their_ computer. I can tell you this: on Windows, it's almost impossible to have any piece of software that you will be sure it works on ALL pc windows. I have even seen, on one PC, NotePad crashing while Wordpad was working perfectly well ! :) > It is not good enough that it works on the developer's PC. Totally true. But this is not the case here. Again, from my experience on the chat room (sometimes more than 100 people there), most people have radio and TV working. Only a handfull have problem. Most are resolved by applying the "chatroom help" steps. > The situation is a disservice to Barry. Well, from the chatroom feedback, it seems that a lot of people are happy. But I agree with you, it could be frustrating for fans not to have access to all this. That's why I'm offering help, on the chatroom and here, because I really and totally know how you could feel. And as I have some knowledge of computers, I find it natural to help other fans :) A last point: As you have certainly guessed by now, English is not my primary language, as I am French. So excuse me for my bad english, and bear with me when I don't understand at the first read all the subtelities of the answers :) I hope I may help you (and others) getting access to the wonderful things that are BG Radio and BG TV. You are absolutely > right, Joe, the sound on BG TV is gone and it IS broken. As I have written to Joe, I had helped some people on the BarryGibb.com chatroom. I know very well how you may feel. But as it works for some people, maybe I can help you so taht it will work for you too ? Did you pass all the tests of the "chatroom" help ? Do you get BG Radio ? As I understood, the problem is only the sound of BGTV : you get the video, but not the sound, am I right ? Did you get once the sound of BGTV (and now it's gone) or did you never get the sound ? Do you have the problem whatever the BGTV quality you use, even if you try the "dial-up" quality ? What is your operating system ? What is your type of Internet connection ? All those questions are here to help diagnostic the problem. You may want to reply to them not on the list but directly to my email address if you want. I hope I may help you. In this series we will ask the question "where are they now" in relation to some people who were very active in the beegees fan base in years gone by who seem to have just dropped off the face of the earth.. Maybe they never made it to the Internet...but you would think that they would have turned up by now if they were..... what makes an active fan suddenly lose interest???? Anyway, I will start the ball rolling...anyone have any info or other names to throw into the ring..feel free! 1. Marty Lam. Hardcore Beegees fan from Japan, big collector...... suddenly nothing has been heard from him for about 4 years now.. no email...no ebay use (He was a Very active collector for most of my teenage years) 2. Patrick Beaupre (France) I met him in france a couple of time and also at a couple of fan meetings in Holland.... Big collector again... have not heard a word from him for years... 3.Anne Russell (UK) was very active in the UK fan club in the 90s. She produced the cartoons that went into the fan magazine..... Suddenly dissapeared... 4. Catherine Sidey (UK) She was a younger young lady.... always came to the fan club events.... until a while back..now nothing! 5. Lois Ray. (UK) Ran the beegees UK Fan club for years....now doesnt have any contact with the fan world at all. I know she got married and took a back seat..but to completely lose interest..Odd. 6.Renee Schreiber (Dinichola? or something similar now) Another person who got married and has not just lost any connection with the fan world.. So..there are some to get started. I am sure there are loads more.......... Where are they Now??? I would agree with you if I my problems with BGTV were consistent. But they aren't. Sometimes it works and sometimes I doesn't. I has to be a technical issue of the web site. Very frustrating and as Joe stated, a disservice to Barry.
