Here's my quick take, track-by-track. "How to Fall in Love, Pt. 1" -- I've been a fan of this tune since '93, despite the fact that it gets very repetitive at the end. Not sure why this was chosen as a single, but it does have classic Barry vocals on some interesting lyrics. I was very dismayed to find out that the single edit has deleted my favorite verse...[And in the prime of my life, I was blessed...]. So where's Part 2? "855-7019" -- Thanks to some very generous fellow listmembers, this wasn't the first time that I had heard this song. Love Barry's delivery on the lyric...[I have suffered for my sins...]. As has been said many times before, this is clearly a hidden jewel...baffling how it ended up as a B-side. "Fallen Angel (remix)" -- OK, the first time I heard this I thought I was shopping in Old Navy. But the more times I listen to this single, the more I love this remixed version. This is somewhat reminiscent of the Stones' "Dance, Pt. 1" (highly recommended to all Gibb fans, by the way). So to all of you Fallen Angel fans out there, and I was surprised to learn how many of you there are, I guess this goes to show that I really do like this song...I just don't like the arrangement that's featured on the album. Again, thanks for letting me ramble and I promise that I'll listen to other albums so that I can post about something other than SIZE. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Is there anybody have the Guilty Pleasure Demos? I already had a budding fascination with the Bee Gees, but that single and the rest of the album were like throwing a match on gasoline. I was 16 years old, grew my hair out "Gibb-style," and drove to Atlanta to see them in the One for All tour. I got a lot of positive attention from some of the female fans in attendance, some of whom might be on this list today. Oh, and the show was great, too. They did a great job on "Giving Up the Ghost." And I have the distinct pleasure of saying that the very first time I ever heard the song "Juliet" was as it was being performed live by the brothers themselves. Needlesstosay, I left Atlanta a lifelong fan. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! And although most people here don't like the ESP album (I think) I am crazy about the first side (ESP, You win again, Hold me like a child, Giving up the ghost and The longest night). So now I'm double green. ;-) Thanks for your story, Jason. I think it was released as a single because Barry wanted it to. From an interview around the time SIZE was released Barry said he was concearned that the song would be overlooked and hinted that R&M outvoted him regarding the song being put out as an earlier or broader release as a single. Good thing they did. A good song, though. Nice arrangement and a very good vocal by Barry. >"855-7019" -- Thanks to some very generous fellow >listmembers, this wasn't the first time that I had >heard this song. Certaintly good enough to be included on the album, along with "My Destiny" In fact, My Destiny was good enough to be a single IMO. >"Fallen Angel (remix)" -- OK, the first time I heard >this I thought I was shopping in Old Navy. I disagree. The arrangement is terrific on Fallen Angel. Sal ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2006 14:14:56 EDT From: Compoccias@aol.com Subject: Re: We are one... I think it is kind of like High Civ (although I like it better) a mixture of very good things and some not so good. And of course you have "You Win Again". I agree about the first side being very strong and much better than the second side. I agree > about the > first side being very strong and much better than the second side. > > Sal Well, maybe you're right. The critics however don't like those two albums (ESP and High Civ) at all. In fact, I think the two "bad sides" of those albums have contributed to the fact that the Bee Gees lost their critical acclaim by the serious rock press in the Netherlands, confirming that the Bee Gees lost their touch and were not able to integrate new sounds and technology on their records in a succesful way. I think critics in the US look at this in a similar way (sorry for my terrible english). (Strangely enough, I have read in several articles that the ESP album was received with a huge amount of praise at the time it was released (at least in Europe) but I have never actually seen or read such a review.) The critics of course are only half right. Personally (and I am trying to be objective here ;-) I think the first half of ESP contains superior poprock, some of the best that was released in the second half of the eighties. I wish the critics would acknowledge that too.
