I think Bee Gees 1st has Barry at 19 at the time as well. I assume that was done intentionally, perhaps as to make them appear closer in age or maybe Stigwood was trying to emphasize their young age by presenting all three as teen-agers? It was considered sociable to exchange cigarettes. I hated going into smoky pubs, but when I finally succumbed, and started smoking myself, it never seemed so bad. Maybe Maurice, like me, didn't see why he should have to go with the flow yet again in later life and give it up because suddenly, what adults had done all through our childhood and youth had apparently become unsociable!
