F. Mayer" Subject: Stuttgart Setlist The Setlist for the opening concert of Robin's German tour in stuttgart yesterday evening was as follows (written down from memory after the concert with the help of Shaw, thanks): Emotion Message How Deep Nights on Broadway Love Hurts My Lover's Prayer (w/ A. Griffin) Night Fever NYMD 1941 Please Saved By The Bell To Love Somebody Words You Win Again Juliet Tragedy ------- Jive Talkin' Stayin'Alive Robin, small band and orchestra with grand piano, 2 male and 2 female backup singers. 2 support acts (about 20 min Alistair Griffin, about 30 min Lucia), the latter had to hear "stop" shouts from the audience. There were some technical problems in Robin's act, mainly in the beginning, Robin's voice hardly to hear sometimes. We were sitting centerstage first row (3 or 4 m from Robin), so I'm not really able to comment on sound quality at all, because we heard the monitor speakers of Robin and the lead guitarist and the orchestra and the drummer directly. Sometimes I saw the singers (stage right from our view) singing but hardly heard them (better than vice versa!). There wasn't much light show, although there were three screens above the orchestra, but there wasn't much to see there. Not the reminicences like on McCartney shows, which was good so, I think. Robin didn't say one longer sentence, only "Hello", "Thank you". The longest talk was before he sang "Massachusetts". He said something like "the first ever record of the Bee Gees" (???). This was the only time the group was mentioned - but no wonder, it was the only comment at all (and wrong). The "hand on the ear" is back as reported, he used that technique several times, and that still looks great. He didn't move more than one meter during the concert (good for us). Personal opinion The song choice made a good concert, the bad mood in the audience after the unknown supports that the people did not want to hear, changed during the second song. Massive reaction and singing with "How Deep". A good and strong version of NOB - the first time I ever heard it with real horns. for me, this was a first highlight of the show. What a great song. Chears for "Love Hurts", also and additional sing along for "Massachusetts". The duet then was quite good also. Surprisingly then: "Night Fever" up tempo. Then a really great new interpretation of "NYMD". This is THE "invention" of the show. The people only reckognized it when the refrain came. Really, really great arrangement, up tempo. Then "Please", not a rocket. But tears and lights and chorus in the audience for "Saved By The Bell". Can't remember exactly the arrangement of "TLS". Then sensation for the insiders: "Words". A lot of "Ah's" in the audience for it. Robin has a feeling what they want. A lot of support by the backup singers hereby. A this point Robin had the audience in his hand. Perfect then: A really mighty "You Win Again". The audience (sold-out venue, about 2500, might have the exact number later) from then on the feet. "Juliet" and "Tragedy" close the regular line-up. Encores were "Jive Talkin'" (not so strong) and "Stayin' Alive". 18 songs at all. The weakest point: It was too short. Some expressed their feelings about that afterwards. However, what was presented was good, at some points even great. Some (mostly technical) problems can be fixed during the tour, I think. The discussion about the songs that would be presented here in the list was obsolete. He chose the secure way. no "Odessa", no "Farmer Ferdinand Hudson". All in all: Positive. More than I had expected. Other fans said the same. The ZDF TV channel and radio station SWR1 were doing interviews among the audience before the gig. Marion asked when it will be aired (it was the same night in "heute nacht", anybody seen it?) and had to give an interview for the answer. When I turned the radio on this morning 7.35 h there was the last sentece of their report (Arrrgh!). It seemed to be positive (anyone heard it?). The "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" printed a Robin photo today titled "The voice of the Bee Gees" and reported about "chears in the Liederhalle" (not a whole concert critic already today). Naughty, naughty .... "Naughty"....., that's a naughty word indeed ...., I was not meaning the= y had waisted their time after Mo died...., they did it before too, and = that was, in fact, my complain...., a simple complain, so I wouldn't ca= ll it naughty. But I do thing that they do owe us something..., at least in a sense...,= as we have to pay for all what they give us (I'm not saying that we sho= uldn't); with this money they could build their studio where they have f= reedom and time to work, and where probably are lots of songs recorded (and possibly new stuff too) so we may = have at least a word to say...., as in a way we can tell they work for = us because we've given them that financialand creative freedom they have. > And who's to say that re-working old songs isn't creative? Right now,= it > seems to be working for Robin. Wasted time? Of course not. I repeat what I wrote two days ago....., re-working a song is a producti= on and performing fact, but it's not that much creative, the moment when= a song written... that's creativity. You can take a song and wrape it w= ith one thousand different arrangements, but the song itself will be the same, the genius is the songwriter...= , the other thing is work and skills, so a songwriter must go for someth= ing new, Robin is a songwriter... or he isn't?. Get five arrangers to do the tracks and the arrangements of an old song= of yours, they'll do all the work, you will only go one day and record = the vocals (the only moment you can add some new ideas or feelings) and = you'll have five versions of your "re-worked" song..., this can't be called creativity in my view, it can be = called a performance...., but for a composer it is an easy way out. > If we can't be supportive about what they're doing (or not doing) now,= let's > at least remember with gratitude what they've already given us and qui= te > complaining. > Anne I admire what they have done (and in certain moments of my life they hav= e been vital I can tell you), but songs are born in a composer's mind so= I can't believe that Robin (or Barry) don't have anything new to say...= , so if they have new stuff, don't go living from the past because we are in the present...., I can imagine th= ey have great songs in the can..., they have put the cookie in my mouth,= what they can't do now it take it away...., because I'm hungry. Happy that Robin tours and happy he sings such nice songs! but... Sad no new songs (just one please!!!) in the list. Sad no "rare" songs in the list. Sad no excellent Robin lead songs in the list (Fallen Angel, Cryin' = Every Day, Gone With The Wind, ISAJ, Like A Fool...) Sad it just lasted an hour. and... Sad that Barry (and Maurice of course (and Andy!)) isn't with him! He did not even sing some of his most important songs he did with the bee gees: Lamplight, And the sun will shine,... and he did not even do "Joke". What is that? No "Another lonely night in NY", no "Boys do fall in love", no song from the new album ( a part from please and love hurts) He let the background singers sing such "famous" Robin Gibb Songs like Night Fever, Staying Alive and Tragedy, which have almost nothing to do with Robin! He also did 100% Barry songs like Words and You Win again. And he did "To Love Somebody", which I have to admit was maybe the nicest moment of the evening full of odd moments. The whole Robin show lastet around 1 hour.... I love the bee gees and I love this guy but I am really deceived with what he deliveres with this show. His best known song whic he alwys did in BG-concerts? Now he did all those NightFever songs which do not suit him.... of course they are great song= s but they are no Robin Songs. Because I Started A Joke was in fact written by Barry and of course all = the stuf from Fever, Spirits, etc, was composed by Robin. Contrary to everybody's concept, the Bee Gees never gave the lead vocal= to the brother who wrote the song but to the one that did not collabora= te at all in the writing process. That's why Mo didn't sing so much, and= for this rule, all Barry leads are Robin's and vice-versa with Mo giving his best input in the musical and in= strumental areas.
