I thought robin did those song reaaly good for a solo effort. The only part i did not like was during stayin alive when one of the back up singers tried to do barry. That just hit a nerve and i thought NO ONE DOES BARRY!!!!!!! but i enjoyed the rest espicaly while robing was singing stayin alive and they were showing the video as well, i felt like crying. On aother note i stayed up all night, as a true fan should. Saw janel shake her thang on tv and now i need sleep nighty nighty to you all. I did hear him sing HDIYL and TLS last year on the radio, when he attended the annual switching on of the lights at Blackpool. (A popular English seaside resort). I thought he sang them well, although I don't think you can compare Robin's and Barry's singing. They're both great, but very different. My guess as to why he was singing songs normally sung by Barry at the Capital 4th is that he was there to do a tribute to the Bee Gees. I think that singing BG songs he didn't usually take the lead in would make him and the audience feel more that it was more of a tribute to the Bee Gees, rather than just singing as Robin Gibb. I hope I'm making sense. Janel and the gang - Great to hear about the exciting time you've been having. No doubt we'll soon be hearing it 'straight from the horse's mouth'! Looking forward to hearing your stories :o) Maggie > Date: Sun, 4 Jul 2004 20:38:16 -0700 > From: "Pat Wong" > Subject: Robin's Performance > > I don't think I can add much that hasn't probably already been said, but geez, couldn't he have > picked out some of the songs he usually takes lead on?! Do you think = the choice of songs and the fact that all three songs are heavily = associated with Barry had any influence on your opinion and enjoyment ? ----- Original Message -----=20 From: 2Lt. Dear List, I'm normally a lurker, but have decided to come out of hiding to share my thoughts on Robin's performance on PBS...which I know I will get flamed for. Overall, I think this performance could have been much better, and I caught myself thinking that it wasn't too good. I was watching with my mother, who was around for all of their hits (I'm only 22), and even she was saying how it was "terrible, oh my god I can't believe he's on this level. They needed to go out on top." Song by Song: JIVE TALKIN'. Certinaly wasn't terrible, but certainly wasn't good. Lost a lot of power and "umph" with the absence of Barry. Wasn't anything spectacular. HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE. I enjoyed this, and it was refreshing. Robin sounded good, and the backup singers helped/added rathan than took away from this song. Good choice. STAYING ALIVE:=20 TERRIBLE. First of all, I hate Staying Alive. I think that song is everything the Bee Gees don't want to be in the eyes of American music fans/critics. That's all these fans think of. Bee Gees =3D Staying Alive. In addition to that, Staying Alive was NEVER a Robin song. Without Barry there, the song is lost. I thought the performance was TERRIBLE. And that African American backup singing doing his little "woohhho woooo" thing didn't help. I love the Bee Gees and I always will. I will always get excited when Robin and/or Barry are out to perform. No matter how good or bad, they are the greatest musicians to ever grace the industry, in my opinion. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to always enjoy a performance or never say anything bad. In the end, I believe the DC performance was not very good. Flame away. Very Sincerely, 2Lt. Sunday Hello Everyone! Before I get into the concert, let me thank Katie, Brigitte, her adorable ( and soon to be famous 12 year old son :) Miles, Linda and Marie for helping me to have another weekend. I am so glad to you all managed to stay. It was worth waking up early ( at 530AM for me ) to be first on line ( I've never been first in line for anything ) at 730AM and stand in the rain all day to get in, wasn't it .... being only 50 yards away in the first row after the VIP Section and off to the right ever so slightly ... What can I say about the weekend briefly. YES THAT WAS ME HOLDING THAT SIGN! Heck had it not been raining all day it would have a bit more life to it. And to think I wasn't going to pull it out because it was so wet .... anyways, I figured he would sing "HDIYL" so my sign said "My love is very deep Robin!" and my shirt said "Rockin' 4 Robin". You need to know I didn't know I was on camera either time. I called my husband during Vince Gill and I could barely say "Hello Jerry" and he's screaming very excitedly "I saw you twice" ( the other time is in the beginnning of "JT" and I am taking a picture ). If you look you can see Katie and Brigitte on your left with me during that song and Marie next to me on your right during "HDIYL". I too was a bit sad when they showed the "Stayin' Alive" clips ... because I realized that that was how those songs should be. All three of them. There were times the orchestra drowned him out and they turned off his microphone at the end a bit prematurely so I have no idea what he said at the end there. If you listen, I am one of the few people that screamed after Barry Bostwick said "... makes you want to get up and dance" ) I admire Robin for having the guts to go on stage and sing. You have to give him some credit ... this is only his second time performing in America without Barry on his left and Maurice on his right. I'm not going to critique it right now because I am still on cloud nine ... but I will say it was unusual hearing him sing songs that Barry sings lead on. The backup singers ... ummmm ... let's just put this way. There will probably only be three people who can sing together and sound like one. Only one part of that trio was there last night in person last night .... though I do think Maurice had something to do with why the rain FINALLY stopped for good around 7PM :) I promise to write more later ... My wonderful husband has bought two tickets to see them for my birthday and I was just wondering if they were any good?? Thanks Karen ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jul 2004 12:03:09 +0000 From: "Janel Clayton" Subject: Robin in DC ... Saturday ... I knew it would not be long before I posted again .... Did I mention he said "Hi" to us during the rehearsal ??? !!! I was telling someone the story on my cell phone during our 12 and a half hour wait yesterday and he was like yeah, I would expect him to go "Hi" to everyone when he came out. And I was like "no, no, you don't understand ..." And explained. It should be noted we all sitting down, having finished watching Clay. I looked over at the stage around 3PM and saw these dark blue jeans, black t-shirt, black hat and ( yes I will admit ) hairy arms and blue tinted glasses ( that is really what gave it away )and went "Umm ... girls ..." and we all stood up. I cannot remember the last time my left leg shook so much ... you all realize had that been Maurice I would have probably been sick all over the place :) A few minutes later, during some down time ( no music, no singing, something technical was going on ) I said quietly "OK girls" ( this was Linda, Marie, Katie, and Brigitte ) "On the count of 3 ... 3,2,1 Hi Robin!" So I did it. And we all got nervous and didn't do a thing except giggle. So I think I said "OK Take 2. 3,2,1" ... and the five of us yelled "Hi Robin!" To which he looked our way, and said "Hi" and waved just to us. And we all waved to him too! A guy named Jim came by a few minutes later and asked us to re-enact it for his video camera ( ugh, more video of me so you can all see my ugly face ). Once we were done the second time, he turned and zoomed in on Robin on stage. Does anyone know of guy named Jim who works with Robin? Andrew, I know this is a busy time for you ... but do you know who this is? We never got his last name! Until next time ...
