It was a disappointment to hear him sing songs that only Barry can do. I would be disappointed if Barry sang his songs as well. It was really sad to see him standing there alone. I too am puzzled over Robin's choice of songs - classic Bee Gees dance tunes for a man who can't dance. He's certainly not there to promote his solo work, but rather the Bee Gees legacy. The songs may not have been the best, but his take on them was interesting, his voice was good, and I admire him for tackling Bee Gees songs in public again. I choose to take it as a sign of healing. Lucas Crouch" Subject: Regarding Robin's performance on PBS... Dear List, I'm normally a lurker, but have decided to come out of hiding to share my thoughts on Robin's performance on PBS...which I know I will get flamed for. Overall, I think this performance could have been much better, and I caught myself thinking that it wasn't too good. I was watching with my mother, who was around for all of their hits (I'm only 22), and even she was saying how it was "terrible, oh my god I can't believe he's on this level. They needed to go out on top." Song by Song: JIVE TALKIN'. Certinaly wasn't terrible, but certainly wasn't good. Lost a lot of power and "umph" with the absence of Barry. Wasn't anything spectacular. HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE. I enjoyed this, and it was refreshing. Robin sounded good, and the backup singers helped/added rathan than took away from this song. Good choice. STAYING ALIVE: TERRIBLE. First of all, I hate Staying Alive. I think that song is everything the Bee Gees don't want to be in the eyes of American music fans/critics. That's all these fans think of. Bee Gees = Staying Alive. In addition to that, Staying Alive was NEVER a Robin song. Without Barry there, the song is lost. I thought the performance was TERRIBLE. And that African American backup singing doing his little "woohhho woooo" thing didn't help. I love the Bee Gees and I always will. I will always get excited when Robin and/or Barry are out to perform. No matter how good or bad, they are the greatest musicians to ever grace the industry, in my opinion. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to always enjoy a performance or never say anything bad. In the end, I believe the DC performance was not very good. Flame away. Very Sincerely, 2Lt. I would recognize that smile anywhere! Hooray for = you Janel! I am so thrilled you were able to go.=0D =0D The following is my opinion about tonight's performance. I have heard a = lot of disappointment on this list tonight. In my opinion, Robin did fantast= ic. He was all alone up there on the huge stage without his lifelong partner= s.=20 Also, in my opinion, he picked just the right songs to sing. You all wan= t him to sing Robin songs. I am trying to think of Robin songs that would have been appropriate for a festivity such as the 4th of July. He needed= to sing songs that were really upbeat as well as songs that were easily recognized by everyone in America. I Started a Joke or Massachusetts wou= ld not have worked. This is also the USA. There are a lot of songs that we enjoy listening to, but they weren't hits here, so people would not readi= ly recognize them. I love Robin's Juliet, but if he sang that song, people here would not recognize it. By singing those three very recognizable so= ngs he kept the Bee Gees name alive. He also got the blood flowing. Did y= ou see everyone dancing? You also need to remember the Bee Gees sang those songs 30 years ago and voices change. One more thing....he doesn't sing like Barry because he is not Barry. He is Robin and has Robin's voice, which is just fine for singing Bee Gees songs without those lifelong partners. God bless you, Robin, for getting up on that big empty stage a= ll alone and singing your heart out.=0D =0D Kathy =0D =0D =0D =0D -------Original Message-------=0D =0D From: words@brothersgibb.com=0D Date: 07/04/04 21:21:59=0D To: words List Member=0D Subject: [words] Janel on TV=0D =0D So that was Janel with the sign that said "my love is very deep" or something like that? They were finally let in about 3:30 p.m. and are in the first row right behind the VIP section :) Let's keep fingers crossed the weather doesn't get worse , although everyone sounded like they were having a great time despite the rain. How can you do Stayin' Alive without Barry's falsetto or the intro to Jive Talkin' without Barry's guitar??? Robin has recorded some really great songs, would have liked to Mary Rose "2Lt. He looked good. I am finally getting used to the baseball cap! Clay Aiken was also fantastic! I also thought that Barry Bostwick's ill fitting suits were very distracting (polyester or what?)
