I guess a Beatle > could have done it and had success, but most other songwriters would have > turned > off their listeners with such egocentric songs My immediate thought when i read the above was that Lennon probably considered himself to be more of the poet genre in later years, the pure, popular songwriting material coming about in the early years (with or w/out collaboration) and occassionally in the later years; whereas Barry, Robin and Maurice always calls themselves songwriters hence the difference in technique.
