Also you must put a bit of enphasi on AN ... Ju-AN the female ,Joanna, is read as JU-AN-NA (the last a is a "neutre vocal", between a and e ... similar to english man) The "J" in Catalan is pronounced exactly like in English... yes, like on jet-plane... I have to clear...Catalan is not the same language that you know as "Spanish" ( We call it Castellano... Castilian). Yes, in Spanish language "J"sound is like english "H" . And this name is written JUAN and pronuonced like HUAN. Everybody in Spain can speak "Spanish", but it's a second language for some of us belonging to a historical territory with its own official language... We are bilingüal. Catalan is a latin language , with common points with Spanish, French or italian languages... It's spoken in Catalonia, Valencia, the Balear islands (Mallorca , Ibiza) and in the south of France. Some 10 milion persons are able to use it...also is said to be one of the 10 most translated languages worlwide and you can study it in universities all over the globe, including USA... and its all over internet... a lot of international sites do have a catalan version today. We have TV and radio channels, press , books, all our educational system, music... (even some popular Gibb songs as islands, how deep, guilty or alone have their catalan cover version! And islands version is very very famous here! ) I will explain my meeting with Robin in another e-mail... I met Robin on June the 18th . He came to Barcelona to promote Please . He permormed live on a program in the television of Catalonia (TV3). He had been in Madrid previously doing more television performances. My friend Cristina and I were very lucky to find out the hotel he was at and we went there... At first we had a lot of problems as the hotel security wouldn't allow us to be there... but me were lucky to meet Erroll (Reid), Robin's chorus man... and he made it possible for us... He's a sweetie !! He took Robin's manager to talk to the security for us to be there!! Thanks to both of them!!! We finally came to meet Robin as he was leaving to the program... He was absolutely wonderful... He was very shy and just was smiling and saying "than you" all the time... so very sweet and gentle... he signed some photos and records for us... we took a photo and had it all filmed on video!! Ater that, we went to the program and we had no tickets.. but 4 persons didn't come and we and other friends were able to get in... They even interview us !! it was a lot of fun!! a great day!! Also the performance in the Catalan TV, unlike those of Madrid, was absolutely live.. which made it even more special! We will never forget, Montse. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Pridham To: words List Member Sent: Sunday, July 20, 2003 12:15 AM Subject: Re: Catalan > Montse, can you please share with us how you met Robin? > > > Mary Pridham, Adelaide, South Oz > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Montse Q" > To: "words List Member" > Sent: Sunday, July 20, 2003 4:48 AM > Subject: RE: Catalan > > > > WOW !! > > Very well said !! > > > > Being Catalan myself, I must admit that I 've had a lot of fun with this > > topic!! > > > > Just to situate everybody... For example I never saw a single bit of promotion on UK TV for anything from Main course through to Spirits, There were no TV appearances....No videos for the songs (appart from Jive talking, Stayin alive and How deep.) It has always amazed me that there were no promo videos made for Tragedy and Love you inside out at a time when promo videos were common. No appearances on Top of the pops.....nothing to show promo wise for "nights on broadway" Night fever "You should be dancing" Tragedy"Spirits having flown" From what I have seen there were also very few USA appearances in this period too...... even though they were practically gods at the time! So ...my question is...what was the secret behind the sales??? Anyone else ever notice this?? lee ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jul 2003 09:45:38 -0400 From: "bellkr" Subject: Re: Bee gees 70's promotion in my amateur opinion it would be the snowball effect. after the first couple of hits the radio stations probably didn't even pause to play their music. otherwise, I just chalk it up to ......"you can't deny talent". - robert stigwood Kelly:) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lee Meadows" To: "words List Member" Sent: Sunday, July 20, 2003 8:36 AM Subject: Bee gees 70's promotion > I have always been interested to know how the bee gees were such a huge act > in the late 70s worldwide seemingly with little, and often , NO promotional > activity at all!!! > > For example I never saw a single bit of promotion on UK TV for anything from > Main course through to Spirits, There were no TV appearances....No videos > for the songs (appart from Jive talking, Stayin alive and How deep.) So yes, you were spot on with his weight! ~8^) Pat Wong (ICQ #61070813) http://www.napathon.net/ - Music Around The World For collecting tips, trade and want lists, album reviews and more. | I read Robin was reported to have said he's 5 foot 10 inches. If I'm remembering this part correctly, he mentioned being 10 stone in weight [at the time of the article]. Your story about him is disappointing, and kind of one of those letdown moments that happen--funny, you devoted years to adoring him, and unbeknowst to him, he trivialized it all by his lack of sincerity and a wee bit of time. Flashback to 1999: Maurice Gibb: AGMF: Miami Beach. I was not 200 in line, but probably at least 70-80 of more than 200, I think. Of course, we all know by now that Mo stayed and greeted everyone that day. And I've told this before, but when my turn came I also had rehearsed forever what I was going to say, which was how much I loved the Bee Gees, and to thank him for the years of wonderful music he had provided. He was completely generous, friendly, warm, and when I told him thank you, his response was, "Well, thank you!" (By the way, reliving this moment again is a major MMM) If you think about it, Mo's response could have been a turning point in my life in some ways, if he had been a jerk--let's face it: it would have had an impact on me. Instead, it had a wonderful, reassuring impact. So have all the other posts about Robin and Barry and their graciousness. What I always tell others is that they are good people too. That's what makes them so easy to love. By the way, Barbara Gibb was also there, and I remember her and Linda both being extremely gracious. I told Barbara that she had wonderful sons, and she thanked me too. What a great memory.
