(#2004-4964) - Topics this issue: 1) Lulu, The Album, and The Funeral, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 10 Jan 2004 18:48:37 +0000 From: "J Gordon" Subject: RE: Lulu, The Album, and The Funeral > >Lulu was interviewed on BBC radio 2 a couple of weeks ago about her new >compilation album. She talked a lot about "First of May". Apparently, >days after Maurice died, her record company suggested that she should >release it as a single (it being the last recorded Maurice). She said she >was almost "physically sick" at the thought about doing so. But months >later, she felt it was more appropriate to include it as the final track on >her compilation. She'd consulted with Robin & Barry who were both >supportive. I can understand how she might feel uncomfortable about releasing "First of May" so soon after Mo's death. They were good friends in the end and she cared about him. The record company didn't. They were all about business and nothing more. It was the same way when Lisa "left-eye" Lopez of the group TLC died in a car accident in Honduras. The remaining members were forced into releasing the album without having time to acknowledge their loss. >>But while I was taking down the details, something inside me said: >>"Should I or shouldn`t I go?" "But I was getting hundreds of calls from >>papers, asking for quotes. I thought that if I went and they started >>taking pictures of me I`d feel very uncomfortable. Yvonne and the kids, >>that was their moment, their time. I am the ex-wife." I think it was considerate of Lulu not to attend the funeral even though she wanted to pay her respects. Whether the idea of being photographed was real or simply in her own mind she is still recognized by people and there would have been pictures if for no other reason than she was Mo's ex-wife. The media is always looking for angles on a story even at a funeral. When Sonny Bono died, his ex-wife Cher delivered his eulogy. It became all about Cher, her grief and her life with Sonny. The media focused almost exclusively on her, following her every move. I can't recall seeing pictures of his current wife and kids. Granted Cher is a current celebrity and known worldwide but I felt that the focus should have been less on her. Maybe an occasional mention would have been better. And for the record I absolutely love Cher.
