That is to say that, if it was charged on amounts over £100,000, (a huge amount of money in those days) the first £100,000 would be taxed normally. It was only the earnings a person received over and above that amount that would be affected by this enormous tax, so it is not as bad as it sounds. It is true, this did drive many stars out of the country until Margaret Thatcher changed it all when she came into power as a result of the Conservative victory in 1979, reducing the tax of the rich at the expense of the not-so-rich. However, nobody's criticising the Bee Gees or any other stars for complaining that their tax was too high and leaving the country. That's human nature. What was being questioned was that they were allegedly telling fans to vote Conservative in the election. Michelle -- Anything from the late '80s on. Those '60s and '70s duds and hairstyles didn't exactly ring my chimes. Nor do males under the age of 30 -- thank goodness.... Debbie Happy Saturday to all those at this List - now tell me, what are your favourite photos of the brothers? I've seen hundreds of them, and it's hard for me to choose a favourite out of the Bee Gees' photos, but for the photos of Andy, I'd say that my favourite has to be the one where he is sitting with Barry, holding the guitar. He's twelve years old in the photo, and the guitar is the one Barry got him for his birthday. And as I said, I really can't choose a favourite photo for the Bee Gees. So, what are your favourite photos of them? Michelle ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 16:34:12 -0500 From: Debbie Howell Subject: The Great Void Joe -- Neither did I. Brian -- Like fudge!! If I ever get wind that Barry stole my career plan without paying me a consulting fee, I'll sue the overalls off him!! Debbie Barry was busy getting Barry's Lawn Service off the ground. There was a lot of research involved, as well as arguing with Robin about what color of lawnmower to get. Barry had to read up on small engine repair, blade sharpening, how to use a rake, etc. JLo is his only customer so far, so he's running in the red. Anybody living in Miami should call him and get a quote. We need to support him in his new venture. It was a long time ago now Maggie and Like fool I never kept the news letters from that fan club ( it was a U.S.A based fan club that gave out the free xmas single that I got at easter and also sent out info on the new Bee Gee album Spirits Having Flown three months after I bought it) but to my recollection it was the Brothers talking via the news sheet or so I was lead to believe. Thinking back do you remember when the home office was going to deport Colin and Vince, Stigwood arranged a protest with a elephant being paraded through Whitehall and the boys was aloud to stay, seems like a lifetime ago now along with Barry being voted the best dressed man in Carnaby street Brian uk who was teenager when these things happened but sadly now is over 50 --part1_f.e01f103.2bba1918_boundary-- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 17:27:35 -0500 From: "Michelle Smith" Subject: RE: Rush and the Bee Gees Brian -- me too! Christine, You're right, it is offensive when people assume or guess something negative about someone and then judge them. But, the thing assumed has to be false for that to apply. I don't think that's the case here. In the biography there is at least two instances in where Robin being a tight wad is mentioned. He is characterized as being frugal in two quotes by very reliable people: Dick Ashby and his father, Hugh. The Keppel Road video also has Maurice making a veiled referance to Robin's frugality. So I don't think this a case of unfounded speculation, but more likely a fact. As for the '79 newsletter to the UK fan club, well that speaks for itself. People may differ as to the appropriateness of such an action, but I feel it was a bit unseemly. Of course I am relying on Brian's information as I have never heard this before. Brian, howver, appears to be one of the more credible people on this list so I'll take this as true.
