One of the better stories, I= =20 think. Maurice Gibb: 1949-2003 Bee Gees 'bereft' Member of top-selling group succumbs after emergency=20 surgery 01/13/2003 By MARIO TARRADELL / The Dallas Morning News Maurice Gibb= ,=20 who with his brothers Barry and Robin built the Bee Gees into a respected,=20 long-running pop group that scored memorable hits in four decades, from the=20 tumultuous late '60s to the urbanized late '90s, died Sunday at the age of=20 53. The vocalist, bassist and keyboardist had been admitted to Mount Sinai=20 Medical Center in Miami Beach four days earlier to have emergency surgery fo= r=20 an intestinal blockage. He suffered cardiac arrest before the operation.=20 =20 AP=20 Maurice Gibb sang and played bass and keyboards in the Bee Gees' omnipresent= =20 hits. =20 "To our extended family, friends and fans, with great sadness and sorrow we=20 regretfully announce the passing of Maurice Gibb this morning," Mr. Gibb's=20 family said in a statement. "His love, enthusiasm and energy for life remain= =20 an inspiration to all of us."=20 The Bee Gees, short for the Brothers Gibb, were known for their tight,=20 falsetto-driven harmonies, for crafting indelible melodies and for an arsena= l=20 of original songs, from the oft-covered "To Love Somebody" and "Run to Me" t= o=20 "Stayin' Alive" and "More Than a Woman." The latter tunes became disco=20 staples thanks to their inclusion in 1977's box office smash, Saturday Night= =20 Fever.=20 Siblings Barry and Robin (Maurice's twin), were able to see their brother=20 before he died, said Pete Bassett, a spokesman for Robin.=20 "The family are together today at Robin's house in Florida and all are=20 utterly bereft at this unexpected loss," he said.=20 =20 AP=20 The brothers (from left, Robin, Barry and Maurice Gibb) attended a party for= =20 the Hollywood premiere of the movie Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in= =20 1978. =20 The brothers rank among the most successful pop acts, exceeded only by=20 artists such as the Beatles and Elvis Presley. They had nine No. 1 songs,=20 wrote dozens of hits for other artists including premier vocalists Barbra=20 Streisand and Dionne Warwick, and sold more than 100 million records=20 worldwide.=20 Their 1977 contributions to the Saturday Night Fever album made it the best=20 selling movie soundtrack ever with more than 40 million copies sold=20 worldwide. In addition to their own staples on the album =E2=80=93 "Stayin'=20= Alive,"=20 "More Than a Woman," "How Deep Is Your Love" and "Night Fever" =E2=80=93 the= y also=20 penned "If I Can't Have You," which became a chart-topping hit for Hawaiian=20 singer Yvonne Elliman.=20 The Bee Gees became members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and won six=20 Grammy Awards, including the coveted album of the year prize for their work=20 on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Their last studio album was 2001's=20 This Is Where I Came In. After a commercial dry spell through much of the=20 '80s and '90s, the trio came back strong in 1997 with Still Waters, a=20 million-selling effort that spawned their last Top 40 hit, "Alone."=20 Back in 1978, Maurice was quick to rightfully defend the group against its=20 detractors who ignorantly labeled them a disco act that fell out of favor=20 with the passing of the dance club style.=20 "People accuse us of being nothing more than a disco band now," Mr. Gibb tol= d=20 TG Magazine. "But they don't know what they're talking about. If you listen=20 to our records, you'll find that there's dance music. But there are also=20 ballads like 'More Than A Woman.' And there are some very beautiful,=20 undanceable songs, too."=20 In fact, two of the group's best album cuts aren't tailored for the dance=20 floor at all. The title track of 1979's Spirits Having Flown is a lovely=20 folk-pop song and "Technicolor Dreams" from This Is Where I Came In is a=20 clarinet-driven throwback to the age of Dixieland music.=20 Another stellar tune on that last album is "Man in the Middle," which=20 features Maurice on lead vocals. While Barry was usually the main voice on=20 the Bee Gees' singles, Maurice always tackled a couple of cuts on each=20 project. In their signature three-part harmony, he took on the middle harmon= y=20 slot, considered by many to be the most difficult yet integral to the sound.= =20 Also, it was Maurice's bass playing on the distinguishable strutting groove=20 that opens "Stayin' Alive."=20 Maurice and his brothers, although originally from England, first gained fam= e=20 as a teen group in Australia. Their first album, 1967's Bee Gees' 1st, was=20 popular in the United States, containing the No. 1 hit "How Can You Mend a=20 Broken Heart." All three Gibbs moved to south Florida in the late 1970s.=20 There they own Middle Ear Studios, where This Is Where I Came In was=20 recorded.=20 Through the years, the Bee Gees have written and produced notable songs for=20 singers such as Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and late brother Andy= =20 Gibb, who had a successful solo career before he died in 1988 at age 30 from= =20 a heart ailment.=20 Other artists who have recorded Bee Gees songs are Janis Joplin, Elvis=20 Presley, Glen Campbell, Jose Feliciano, Michael Bolton, Celine Dion and the=20 Fugees.=20 In the 1990s, the Bee Gees released two studio albums and went on a world=20 tour that spawned a million-selling live disc, One Night Only. In June 2002,= =20 Maurice indulged his paintball passion by opening Commander Mo's in North=20 Miami Beach, a store that sells guns, ammunition and clothing for the popula= r=20 game.=20 Mr. Gibb's first wife was British singer Lulu. I was glad to hear some of you confirm that Barry made it to the funeral. I know everyone handles death in their own way, but to me, attending the funeral is such a big part of the healing process when I have lost loved ones. I am glad to see Barry made it ... I also read Robin's message on his own website. I was so upset when I read the part that went something like "the past few days have been a nightmare in which I will never awake." With all the "shared pain" Robin and Mo felt over the years as twins, you gotta wonder how he's getting any sleep, let alone go back to work, which Robin has made clear he intends to do. God bless him ... that will be rough. At least he knows he has the love of thousands, if not millions of people behind him. And of course, God bless Barry too. God bless everyone in the Gibb family. I haven't physically watched the Larry King Live interview again, but one scene comes to mind whenever I do think about it ... the part where Barry, Mo, and Robin are talking about their health problems. Mo talks about his alcoholism, Barry talks about his smoking ( and the decision to quit ), arthritis and back. Then Larry asks Robin how he's been health wise. Robin says something like "I'm in good health, Larry touch wood. There are some days I wake up pretty miserable ..." How prophetic is that. God, I still well up when I think about Mo not being here. I can't even imagine what this is like for the Gibb family. It is so hard to believe that a week ago ... we all thought Maurice was fine. I guess subconciously I figured he would go play some paintball or work on the house that he and Yvonne were supposed to move into later this year, but I never thought this would happen. I am moving towards the anger phase, especially with more and more reports that Mo didn't have to die. I seem to recall seeing some report a while back that talked about how many hospital deaths are caused by medical mistakes ... well, la de de da. Not that I had a hard time believing that story before, but any remaining doubts have been erased. Whether Barry attended or not is not really important, since the service = is really for the comfort of the living, and not for Maurice. If it = wasn't going to comfort Barry, then it's his choice. Maybe he got more = comfort from MJ. I agree with you, Karen S., Maurice might have got a kick about the = "one-third off" ticket, but not the spirit behind it. As to the whole thing coming on so shockingly fast, the Eagles / Don = Henley song "In a New York Minute" sure rings true. As to the Gibbs friendship with MJ, it goes way back. They have a lot in = common, childhood success, all Kings of Pop, extreme ridicule, etc., = plus working together on Diana Ross. I do want to know about what caused this, gory as it may seem, since it = might save one of our lives to know (or a friends).
