I made a point of watching the entire hour segment thinking I may have missed something and there was zip. I sat through Iraq, North Korea, bubonic plague, a possible banana shortage (I'm serious), suffered through the sports- and when they got to entertainment there was nothing but the hoopla surrounding "Joe Millionaire." Glad most of you were able to see tributes. I had stayed up late the night before the memorial, and meant to sleep late, and I awakened during the time the service would have been. I'm sorry I never got to meet Mo- he seemed like the most normal, sweet, down to earth guy with a great sense of humor. Please don't flame me, but I think he would have gotten a laugh about the "one third off" ticket. I admire the brothers stick-to-it-iveness, but after reading a lot of reports, there may be nothing to uncover about his death. It sounds as though the cause of the cardiac arrest was septic shock, and in order to avoid further damage to his system, surgery was necessary to remove the culprit. It may have been a no win situation- I do question the time it took to reach a diagnosis and the use of general anesthesia (if that's what they did). The whole thing is just so out of the blue. It is so important for me to share the emotions of these days with you. I think that Mo's passing away has changed this group forever. So far we shared our passion for the music of the brothers, had discussions and jokes, but these days the list means so much to me, it is something so much bigger, like a new family. I was watching the news the day of Mo's passing, crying, and thinking of you, thinking "what Brian does now, what Kilburn Towers does, what Ronnie does?", people I never met, but know from their posts here, and this made me cry even more. Men are not supposed to cry, especially not here in Turkey, but after all, I was home, alone. All papers here had news of Maurice's death in front pages with pictures. Radios announce airing ONO, play SNF songs occasionally, so the coverage is not so bad. Cause we know already what caused Mo not to be with us anymore: a strangulating hernia due to lack of immediate care from Mt Sinai Hospital. The following reconstruction is what supposedly has happened with Maurice, acquiring information too from an article karen posted to the list on January 14th. According to David English and Barry and Robin Mo was in good shap, sun tanned, in good spirit. So it must have have happened very sudden on Wednesday, this condition of a strangulated hernia, which arises when a hernia cuts off blood supply to the intestine, often requiring emergency surgery. Hernias arise when the outer layer of the abdominal wall weakens and tears, forming a sac that juts out, like a bulge in a car tire. Barry pointed out that it may have been a birth defect. In most instances though, people with hernias have elective surgery with few complications. But in a small percentage of cases the untreated hernia will snag and cut off blood supply to the intestine or bowel, a life-threatening condition. And that's what was the case with Mo. For a person that never wanted to go near a doctor, it was a huge sign to admit himself to the hospital. But where was the immediate diagnosis needed to save Mo, in the long hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning 4 AM? Cause this was what was happening meanwhile with Maurice's stomach: Even a very small hernia can get stuck and twist around, raveling the intestines as well, That knot halts blood flow, killing off the tissue, a condition doctors call ischemia. When the bowel dies, it spews toxins and poisons into the body. This could have sent Mo into a septic shock, which in turn could have lead to cardiovascular complications For someone with an underlying cardiac disease, this stress can prove the final straw, experts say. The only way to address the situation is to go to the problem's core. And that is what the surgeons did. They operated on Mo after he had the cardiac arrest, before his scheduled operation, something both Barry and Robin condemned being "very questionable". By that time, already 80 percent of Maurice's intestines were infected with gangrene, cause the blood circulation had been cut off for a long period of time, and they were removed by the surgeons. The surgeons were doing the right thing at that time, cause until you correct the underlying insult, the rest of the body can't recover. If you don't correct the underlying ischemia, you don't get that out of the body, the rest of the body is only going to get worse, not better. But, of course, they already were WAY TOO LATE. At that time, Mo couldn't be saved anymore, even if after the operation, he regained consciousness for a while, wiggled his toes, and squeezed the hand of his daughter, and recognized people in the room. This all occurred within a very short period of time, without warning. Patients may experience severe abdominal pain on a par with no other pain. In the case of Mo, cardiac arrest complicated an already complicated situation by further decreasing the blood supply and speeding up the need for surgery, 'making a condition that wasn't an emergency, an emergency, Why oh why didn't he get the immediate care and attention that was needed though in his serious condition? Like Janine said: >How could he have been there from Wed. afternoon until >Thurs. morning, with most of his gastrointestinal tract >dying, & they not know it?!!! Wouldn't blood tests indicate >the massive sepsis? Wouldn't his temperature have been thru >the roof? Did they do any tests/scans? Studies have shown that more complications arose after emergency surgery for hernias than after elective surgery. Researchers have found that anywhere from 6 percent to 14 percent of patients die after emergency hernia surgery, as many as 50 times the number that pass away following elective hernia surgery. I am both sad and bitter, but lately getting more and more angry. Cause one of the greatest recording artists of all time, the most sweetest and generous man, could have been saved. When my girlfriend got severe abdominal pains during the night some years ago, she too ultimately went to a doctor, later to the hospital. Diagnosis: appendicitis, probably the most common operation performed. Yet still, if you don't operate within a few hours, it can be life threatening. So even if it is common, it should never be underestimated. I hope Barry and Robin will succeed in their quest to find out what went wrong in that hospital, especially in the first hours. It won't bring Mo back, but will give peace of mind, even if the anger might never disappear. Someone should be held account for this. -- Juan (sorry if this was too long) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Jan 2003 09:56:20 EST From: Ashleigh9601@wmconnect.com Subject: Barry was at the funeral --part1_1cb.129bc1.2b582214_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit says Barry didn't attend the funeral, but went later with Michael Jackson, but the article clearly has inaccuracies in other things.
