Well, I've had a day to start collecting my thoughts, such as they are. I spent the day at the office, alone. I was scheduled to set up a new computer, the kind of mundane frustration that suited my suffering. Some people hit pillows, others cry into them. As for me, I slogged through menus with the Microsoft Battle Cry of War: "Windows has found new hardware, and is searching for ways to screw it up..." Worked for me. I never met Maurice, and yet never felt this way about the death of someone I never knew. I've kept the radio off. I don't want to hear the news. I haven't listened to a single song today. Probably won't tomorrow either. I feel numb, and at this point, static, not music, suits me best. It does no good to speculate, of course. Either there will be more Gibb songs, down the road, or there won't be. Either way, things have changed. Back when Andy died, it eventually motivated the Gibbs to start touring again, not wishing to waste the gift they were given, the gift of their extraordinary talents. Will it happen again? Perhaps. Or, maybe they'll decide that enough is enough, their musical legacy has to end somewhere, and it may as well be here. Like I said, either way, things have changed. Don't be too hard on that Chris Hutchins fellow. I have to be honest here, this is the one day in my life that I am truly grateful never to have had to be any sort of official "Gibb spokesman". There ARE no right things to say right now, but most surely there are ten thousand WRONG things, all waiting to be said in a careless emotional moment. And this whole day has been one careless emotional moement for me. So let's be understanding of those who share our collective loss. We need each other. It's slowly getting easier. I caught the last 20 minutes of CNN's rebroadcasting of Bee Gees interview from last February. CNN usually shows whatever they show at 9PM EDT, again at midnight eastern time, so there's a heads up for anyone who wants to see it. If you hear a big sigh and scream coming from wherever Pennsylvania is from your location, that's me yelling at CNN for not showing it again. Instead of crying when Maurice made them laugh with his comments about threesomes, I actually managed to smile a bit. Even when they sang a portion of "How Deep is Your Love" I didn't sob uncontrollably ... I am not saying I am healed, but I am slowly on the road to recovery. A lot of times the director would do closeups of the three of them during the Larry King Live interview, so you didn't often see the three of them together. That being said, the hardest part was watching the three of them on stage when they would weave in the "ONO" footage, because that is something that will happen again. I am taking some solace in knowing that at least Maurice lived to see the "comeback" that mattered ... that is, when they got all those Lifetime Achievement Awards and inducted into the various Halls of Fame. Obnoxious stars like Eminem and barely clothed stars like Brittany Spears should take a lesson from them.
