Times like this it's good to have the internet. I don't think I would have taken the news quite the same way without it. It's kind of nice to know that there are fans you can share your feelings with, news sites that give you frequent updates (news.google.com is particularly good for this), and a way to feel and provide emotional support. I first found out about the medical crisis on Drudge Report, of all places. The website linked to a Miami news source. Of course, I'm hoping and praying, as are all of us, that all this turns out well for him. It wouldn't be the same without Maurice around. That wouldn't be the Bee Gees, just two soloists doing an album together. I, for one, am truly looking forward to being able to have another chance, someday, to make those awful Maurice Gibb jokes of mine. The Sonny And Cher thing. The Maurice Gibb lunch box thing. My mind just works that way. It makes me a little self-conscious discussing his situation now, because it would be wrong of me to even consider making jokes, at least until he could laugh without hurting. In the meantime, things I couldn't help observing... 1) Reading all those headlines on news.google.com, so far the main groaner of a headline quip is "Bee Gee is Stayin' Alive." Could be worse, I suppose. 2) On Fox 5 TV news last night, the story of his illness shortly followed an item about a steakhouse in Manhattan serving a $41 burger, made from Japanese Kobe beef. I cringed, sure in my heart that they were going to segue straight into the Maurice Gibb story with "and SPEAKING of gut busters..." ...but they didn't. I hate segues. Don't ever let a news story about you come right before the weather report, because the weatherman ALWAYS does a segue. I don't watch TV news much at times like this. 3) So, Michael Jackson really IS doing a project with Barry Gibb! All those news stories seem to mention this. Almost enough to get me to do jokes about THAT. Almost, but not quite. 4) They also mention that Robin Gibb had a premonition about Maurice's medical crisis. I didn't have any premonitions about this, but once I found out about it, I had a premonition that Robin was going to have a premonition about it. That sort of counts, right? Yeah. That's about as close to humor as I'm likely to get for awhile. Get well soon, Maurice... This may be old news by the time its posted .... but Robin has postponed promoting "Please" ( heck his plane has probably landed by now ) and is on his way to Miami from Europe. The family released a statement sometime ago ... but it really didn't say anything new. BBC's entertainment page indicates Maurice isn't improving, but then the BBC has been wrong before ( I apologize to all my friends over there ) And BTW, my digital cable guide claims that VH1 will show the Behind the Music about Andy Sunday afternoon at 12:30PM. Knowing what I know about the TV business, that's NOT a coincidence. That's sick, and one of the reasons I am glad to be out of the business.
