Arif was a genius! Marty From SF I'm not certain they would have eventually latched onto the R&B/Dance trend (although its possible). I do think it would have been likely they would have continued with more Americanized music, which is a development that had started as early as '72. The Bee Gees/Arif Mardin collaborations were great. Arif was indeed a great producer and his recordings speak for themselves. I'm sure the recording industry has suffered a great loss.
