They had the airplay, they had the demand, and Polydor/A&M botched their supply, which hurt them because the chart methodology of the time was still based heavily on the balance of sales and airplay. It was a Top 10 record, no question. Grant "Alone" should have fared better than #28 on the U.S. chart, but the biggest disappointments for me with respect to the US charts were "You Win Again" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls", as they were virtually ignored here in the US. Her mention of Barry....nada, zilch, zero. I don't deny her talent. Barry wrote some songs for a 60+ year old diva. What category would that fit into? Pop, NO - Rock, NO- Easy Listening (what exactly is that?). His lyrics as always were awesome, the melodies were breath taking. The problem I think, right songs, wrong vocalist. zip Wrong vocalist? No way. Barry wrote some fine songs, Streisand was in excellent voice, and I think the songs did suit her as I'm sure these songs were crafted by Barry with Streisand in mind. The album just wasn't as big a success as the first one. In retrospect, how could it have been? It was the highest debut of the week when it entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 35 in the spring of 1997. That was due to airplay alone, so clearly DJ's were playing it, and the public responded favorably. We figured as soon as the commercial single was released in the US, sales would then kick it into the Top 20 and upward from there. In week two, it made a small jump to 28, stayed there for another week, then fell. Polydor/A&M misjudged the demand for the single and didn't ship enough to support it. Sad. "One", on the other hand, was a bonafide Top 10 hit in the US, peaking at number 7. I know Warner Brothers was accused of not doing enough for the Bee Gees when they were signed to the label, but I thought that record deservedly got a lot of promotion and support. The fact that the Bee Gees were actively on the road and doing a lot of appearances as it was released didn't hurt. It was a really exciting time to be a Bee Gees fan in North America to see them receive a lot of overdue exposure after being shunned for so many years. I was in junior high school at the time...it was almost surreal to see kids my age embrace their music. Grant You bring out a good point about One being supported by a tour. In contrast "Alone" and the Still Waters album wasn't, like the rest of their albums from the 90's. To me, this was a key issue during that time and a major missed oppurtunity for them. The worm had turned again for them and the lack of touring I believe hurt their chances to truly take advantage of their new found appeal. Lauderdale, Fl. concert, the end of Oct. as performing with her. Whether Linda or Barry attend either Ft. Launderdale concert will be interesting to find out or whether Barbra sings any songs from Guilty Pleasures. I remember Barry and Barbra performing a while back together at one of her outdoor concerts where they sang songs from the Guilty album...both of them dressed in white. Possibility is still there that he might make an appearance either in the audience on on stage. Maybe Barbra will then remember some of the songs from the Guilty Pleasures album. http://www.ticketsnow.com/Concert_Tickets/Barbra_Streisand_Tickets.html Genny > > Anyway - to my credit, I hope - Il Divo are confirmed as support, so those > expecting Barry or Neil Diamond to open can relax! I guess they have been to a couple of the games. (They play the best of 7 games...some in Miami, some in Dallas). Below is a link to the news video. They actually talk to Barry about two-thirds of the way through. Both Barry and Linda look like they are relaxed and having a wonderful time. There are five little video screens showing on the web site. It is the one with the people at the tables. Right now the video is still there, but who knows when they will change it. For those who don't know, Barry is wearing a white t-shirt because the Miami Heat team has asked fans to wear white. _http://cbs4.com/heat/local_story_167063827.html_ (http://cbs4.com/heat/local_story_167063827.html) Take care.
